Real-time Surface Data from VIKING Buoys as Part of the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP)

“Near real-time” surface data from VIKING buoys deployed as part of the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP).

The data come from the following 10 Viking buoys: PMZA-RIKI, PMZA-VAS, AZMP-ESG, AZMP-HLX, AZMP-STA27, IML-10, IML-14, IML-7, IML-BA and NORTH-AJAX

Fisheries and Oceans Canada monitors the marine environment using automated oceanographic buoys as one of its tools, designed and developed by a scientific team from the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, in partnership with Multi-Électronique. In addition to measuring a multitude of meteorological and oceanographic parameters at the water surface, these buoys independently collect temperature and salinity profiles to a depth of 200 m without human intervention, and transmit the data in real time.

The buoys are part of the Department’s Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program’s sampling strategy, which, since 1998, has been assessing the oceanographic conditions in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Scotian Shelf, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Shelf. The program aims to better understand, describe and predict the state of the marine ecosystem, as well as to quantify the changes observed in the physical, chemical and biological properties of the ocean, whether they be seasonal, yearly, or over longer periods. In fact, the buoys are floating laboratories that operate 24 hours a day. They are invaluable to the scientific community for studying climate change and monitoring the state of the ocean.

The automatically acquired profiles are used to quantify the rapid temperature and salinity changes that can occur (due to tides, for example) and to put into context the biological samples obtained by scientists on board vessels at much lower frequency. Mariners also appreciate having offshore wind and wave conditions available in real time from online services.

Les données proviennent des 10 bouées Viking suivantes: PMZA-RIKI, PMZA-VAS, AZMP-ESG, AZMP-HLX, AZMP-STA27, IML-10, IML-14, IML-7, IML-BA et NORTH-AJAX Pêches et Océans Canada effectue le monitorage de l’environnement marin en utilisant, parmi ses différents outils, des bouées océanographiques automatisées conçu et développé par une équipe scientifique de l’Institut Maurice-Lamontagne, en partenariat avec Multi-Électronique. En plus de mesurer une panoplie de paramètres météorologiques et océanographiques à la surface de l’eau, ces bouées permettent d’effectuer des profils de température et de salinité jusqu’à une profondeur de 200 m de façon autonome, sans intervention humaine, et de transmettre les données en temps réel. Les bouées s’insèrent dans une stratégie d’échantillonnage du Programme de monitorage de la zone atlantique du Ministère qui, depuis 1998, évalue les conditions océanographiques ayant cours dans le golfe du Saint-Laurent, le plateau néo-écossais ainsi que le plateau de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. Le Programme vise à mieux comprendre, à décrire et à prévoir l’état de l’écosystème marin, de même qu’à quantifier les changements observés dans les propriétés physiques, chimiques et biologiques de l’océan, que ce soit à l’échelle des saisons, des années ou sur des périodes plus longues. Les bouées sont en fait des laboratoires flottants en activité 24 heures sur 24. Elles sont d’une aide très précieuse pour la communauté scientifique dans les études sur les changements climatiques et le suivi de l’état de l’océan. Les profils acquis de façon automatiques permettent de quantifier les changements rapides de la température et de la salinité qui peuvent survenir – en raison de la marée par exemple – et de mettre en contexte les échantillonnages biologiques faits par les scientifiques à bord de navires à des fréquences moindres. Les navigateurs apprécient aussi le fait de connaître en temps réel les conditions de vents et de vagues au large, grâce à la diffusion en ligne des données.</gco:CharacterString> <lan:PT_FreeText> <lan:textGroup> <lan:LocalisedCharacterString locale="#en">“Near real-time” surface data from VIKING buoys deployed as part of the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP).
