Census of species of endemic butterflies with special status of salt marshes in the southern Gaspé Peninsula

During the 2011 summer season, 16 salt marshes from the southern Gaspé Peninsula were surveyed for the presence of maritime ringlet, maritime copper and short-tailed swallowtail, three species of Lepidoptera possessing a special status. These marshes have been chosen according to whether they contain various plant species essential to the butterflies studied. Two populations of maritime copper have been confirmed in Gaspé, in the estuaries of the Dartmouth and York rivers. In addition, two new populations were discovered, the barachois of the Saint-Siméon River and the Petite Rivière Port-Daniel. No new populations of maritime ringlet or short-tailed swallowtail have been observed.
